Bhutan currently lacks empirical data on sunflower’s adaptability, agronomic performance, and oil yield potential under its diverse agro-climatic conditions. To address this gap, ARDC Bajo has initiated a trial to evaluate the adaptability and oil production potential of selected sunflower varieties under the environmental conditions of the Wangdue region.
The study involves eight varieties: Barishorjo Mosk, Kendo Europe, Bumthang Local (Yusipang and Subcenter), Indian (Subcenter), Japanese (Subcenter), Khotokha Local, and Mongar Local. These varieties are being assessed for key traits such as flowering duration, plant vigor, seed quality, yield attributes, and oil content. The trial aims to generate baseline data essential for developing a viable sunflower-based oilseed production system in Bhutan.
This initiative also responds to a request from Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhag to identify suitable sunflower varieties for oil production, supporting Bjena Gewog’s goal to promote sunflower oil as its One Gewog One Product (OGOP).
Findings from the trial are expected to inform varietal selection, policy, and extension strategies, while contributing to Bhutan’s broader objectives of achieving edible oil self-sufficiency and promoting climate-resilient agriculture.
